NEDLAC SUMMIT DECLARATION
02 October 1999
We, the four Nedlacconstituencies, commit ourselves to
addressing the following priority issues over the nexttwelve months
and in doing so contribute to the fulfillment of Nedlac's
foundingobjectives and economic development, social equity, and
increased participation ineconomic policy-making:

Taking forward the achievements of the Presidential Jobs Summit
including the outstanding issues of macroeconomic policy, labour
market policy and concluding a framework agreement on a
comprehensive social security system for South Africa.

Actively participating in the formulation of trade policy in
preparation for the Millennial round of negotiations in the World
Trade Organisation.

Exploring ways in which Nedlac might contribute to initiatives
to address the crisis of HIV and AIDS in South Africa's workplaces
and communities.

Strengthening Nedlac's relationship with Parliament.

Monitoring the implementation and the effectiveness of
programmes, policies and legislation agreed by Nedlac and the
various institutions established by Nedlac through, inter alia,
developing a programme of research and information-sharing.

Continuing to build Nedlac as an efficient and effective
institution for social dialogue in South Africa.

Increasing Nedlac's participation in the formulation of a
country position in regional institutions such as SADC and in
multilateral and international institutions, in an appropriate
manner.
- Reactivating the programme of the Public Finance and Monetary
Policy Chamber by ensuring that the parties commit to engaging on
key policy issues falling within the mandate of the chamber.
