Terms of Reference
Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act, gives workers the right
to take part in protest action to promote or defend their
socio-economic interests. The Act gives Nedlac the task of bringing
the parties to a Section 77 notice together to attempt to resolve
the reasons for the contemplated protest action.
Recent Applications Filed, Considered and in the Process
of being Considered:
- Fedusa filed an application on 22 January
2009, seeking intervention and deliberations on the issue of
ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorist at railway
crossings. The matter is under
consideration.
- Cosatu and subsequently Mewusa filed an
application on 18 June 2008, citing that an urgent intervention
needed to be implemented by Government and Business in an attempt
to reduce increasing food prices, fuel, interest rates,
nationalisation, privatisation etc. The matter has
been deemed to be considered.
- Cosatu Eastern Cape filed an application on 24
June 2008, citing poor service delivery in the Eastern Cape
resulting in high unemployment rate, crime and poverty.
Deliberations on the matter have been
completed.
- Cosatu Western Cape filed an application on 03
July 2007, seeking intervention on the issue of upgrading and
improvement of public transport in the Western Cape. There were
unnecessary overcrowding, delays, robberies which resulted in
deaths and unfair dismissals of commuters by their employers.
