NEDLAC HOLDS INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP IN PREPARATION FOR FINANCIAL SECTOR SUMMIT

Nedlac's task team on the financial sector will interact intensively with eleven foreign delegates over the next two days in order to learn from international experience on the restructuring of financial sectors, and to gain new perspectives on their own positions and debates. They will also interact with local experts from the Reserve Bank and Micro-Finance sector.

The workshop has been kept intentionally small, so as to be able to extract the best benefit from the interactions with the local and foreign delegates.

The topics up for discussion are the following:

THIRD TIER BANKING SECTOR

Speakers: Arthur Arnold, Henry Jackelen, and Carlos Salas

Arthur Arnold, the Netherlands, CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions Inc; specializing in financial management, financial co-operatives, access to financial services for the poor.

Henry Jackelen, from Brazil, is the Deputy Resident Representative UNDP Brazil, specializing in enterprise and financial sector development, as well as microfinance in developing countries.

Carlos Salas Páez, from the Department of Sociology, Metropolitan Autonomous University, Mexico, specializing in labour economics, alternative policies for development and the critical assessment of the foundations of Neoclassical Economic Theory

Paul Murgatroyd, United States; World Bank Lead Specialist for Finance in the Africa Region, specializing in financial sector policy, banking system issues and bank restructuring, development banking and rural and SME finance.

Jens Reinke; United Kingdom; Senior Researcher at the Centre for Research into Economics and Finance in Southern Africa at the London School of Economics; specializing in balance of payments issues; foreign direct investment; microfinance, specifically financial regulation, linkages with the commercial banking sector and financial sustainability.

Roger Manring: United States; a senior vice president at Nathan Associates, has 27 years of professional experience in applied economic and financial analysis, privatization, strategic planning and project evaluation.

Charles Cadwell; United States; Chair and Principle Investigator of the IRIS Centre at the University of Maryland; specialising in the identification and reform of policies affecting investment climates, SMME development and finance, regulatory reform and entry barrier reduction, business advocacy, political economy and business and law.

Gill Marcus; South Africa; Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. Responsible for the Bank Supervision; Exchange Control; Financial Services; Financial Stability and National Payment System Departments. Chair of the Budget Committee; Financial Stability Committee; Financial Markets Advisory Board; Standing Committee for the Revision of the Banks Act; Policy Board for Financial Services and Regulation.
