NEDLAC SUMMIT 2002

6 November 2002

The Nedlac Annual Summit, scheduled for Saturday 9 November 2002, at the Sandton Convention Centre, will be officially opened by the Deputy President, Jacob Zuma. Three hundred delegates from the Nedlac Constituencies of Business, Government, Labour and Community, as well as guests from a wide spectrum of South African society, will attend. Guests include ambassadors, International Labour Organisation representatives, heads of other statutory bodies and Chairpersons of Parliamentary portfolio committees. The theme of the summit is Sustainable Development: A platform for growth

Senior leaders from each of the Nedlac constituencies will address the gathering, after which the Executive Director of Nedlac, Phillip Dexter, will give an overview of the work of Nedlac, for the past year. The speakers from the constituencies are: the Minister of Labour, Membathisi Mdladlana for Government, Attie du Plessis (chairman of Business South Africa) and Patrice Motsepe, (President of Nafcoc) on behalf of business; Ruth Ntshulana-Bhengu, Deputy President of the South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) for the Community Constituency, and the General-Secretary of Cosatu, Zwelinzima Vavi for Labour.

There will be four commissions:

  • The ILO Commission on the Social Dimensions of Globalisation
  • The New Partnership for African Development and the African Union
  • Investment, Sector Strategies and Partnerships
  • Social Security

Each commission will have a chairperson, a presenter and a respondent from the Nedlac constituencies who will lead the discussion.
