THE HEART OF SOCIAL DIALOGUE MOVES TO ROSEBANK
After seven years in rented offices in Auckland Park, the
National Economic Development and Labour Council, Nedlac, has moved
into its own building. The building, for which a name is still to
be decided, is in Rosebank, north of Johannesburg. The Department
of Labour, which funds Nedlac, provided the money.
Finding the right building to house Nedlac was not an easy
process. As the host of between 200 and 300 meetings annually
between its constituencies (government, labour, business and
community), Nedlac needs to have significant meeting venues. These
must accommodate big and small events, ranging from Executive
Council meetings, which bring 80 delegates around the table, to
small five-person (one-a-side plus secretariat) gatherings. On any
one day, there can be up to four different meetings happening at
the same time. The ground floor of 14A Jellicoe Avenue has been
renovated to provide up to 7 different venues, whilst also
accommodating up to 100 people in its main meeting room.
The secretariat of Nedlac is small. For the number of meetings
that it organises, facilitates and minutes, the staff of 16 people
is one of the "leanest and meanest" of similar government bodies.
Nedlac runs on a tight budget, of only R7 million per annum, so the
building could not be too big or costly to run.
A solution was found by agreeing to rent out office space to the
newly-formed Proudly South African (Section 21) company. Proudly
South African will occupy the second floor of the building.
The venue is slightly closer to Pretoria for those Government
representatives coming to meetings at Nedlac; it is close to taxi
and bus routes, as well as being within walking distance of hotel
accommodation for those delegates from other centres.
