NEDLAC MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
26 June 2002
Nedlac's Management Committee today agreed that a number of
meetings need to take place in the next few weeks in order to take
forward issues on the Nedlac agenda.
On Trade and Industry issues, the Management Committee agreed
that a one-day workshop would be held to kick-start engagement on
the Integrated Manufacturing Strategy. On Labour Market issues, it
was agreed that the Labour Market Chamber would meet within the
next week to discuss the Insolvency Bill. Labour indicated in the
meeting that the Bill that had been presented to Parliament by the
Department of Justice did not reflect some issues that were agreed
in the Labour Law Amendments process.
On Development Chamber issues, the Committee agreed that a
meeting should be confirmed with the Minister of Education as soon
as possible to take forward discussion on the transformation and
reconstruction of higher education.
The Management Committee noted that the Civil Society Summit has
been set for 12 -13 August 2002. This Summit will look at how to
strengthen the voice of civil society in economic decision-making,
and specifically, in the implementation of the Cotonou agreement
between the ACP (African-Caribbean-Pacific countries) and the
European Union.
The Management Committee noted Nedlac's Audited Financial
Statements for 2000-2001. These will be forwarded to Nedlac's
Executive Council for adoption. The Executive Council will meet on
19 July. It was agreed that the focus of this meeting would be the
New Partnership for African Development, Nepad. The Executive
Council meeting scheduled for 30 August will not be convened, due
to the constituencies' involvement in the World Summit on
Sustainable Development.
Today also saw the release of the first edition of the Nedlac
Socio-Economic Development Trends Bulletin. This bulletin, which
will be published quarterly, compiles key socio-economic data from
a variety of sources, in order to give an overview of South
Africa's social and economic indicators.
