NEDLAC SUMMIT 2001

The Nedlac Annual Summit, scheduled for Saturday 27 October, at the Sandton Convention Centre, will be officially opened by the Deputy President, Jacob Zuma. Three hundred and fifty delegates from the Nedlac Constituencies of Business, Government, Labour and Community, as well as guests from a wide spectrum of South African society, will attend.(See detailed programme)

Senior leaders from each of the Nedlac constituencies will address the gathering, after which the Executive Director of Nedlac, Philip Dexter, will give an overview of the work of Nedlac, for the past year. Confirmed speakers thus far include the Minister of Labour, Membathisi Mdladlana for Government, Reul Khosa of Nafcoc on behalf of Business, and Petronella Linders of the Disabled People of South Africa will represent the Community Constituency. The Labour speaker has not yet been confirmed.

There will be four commissions:

* The African initiative (MAP): SA and the African response to globalisation
* Globalisation, unemployment and decent work
* Nedlac, social dialogue and the multi-lateral institutions WTO, IMF, WB, ILO
* Globalisation and the prospects for investment and growth

Each commission will have a chairperson, a presenter and a respondent who will lead the discussion. These include Rams Ramashia, Director-General of Labour, and overall government convenor in Nedlac; Raymond Parsons, overall convenor of Business in Nedlac; Ebrahim Patel, General Secretary of Sactwu and overall convenor of Labour in Nedlac; Fadila Lagadien of the Disabled People of South Africa; Cas Coovadia of the Banking Council and Jim Buys, business convenor of the Public Finance Chamber in Nedlac.

The Summit will also be attended by Minister of Trade & Industry, Alec Erwin; Minister of Labour, Membathisi Mdadlana; Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Valli Moosa, and Minister of Public Works, Stella Sigcau. Guests include ambassadors, Trade Union bodies from other SADC countries, ILO representatives, other statutory bodies and Chairpersons of Parliamentary portfolio committees.

The 2001 Summit falls just before the third anniversary of the Presidential Jobs Summit, which took place on 30 October 1998. This is expected to feature in the speeches of the constituencies, as well as in the commission discussions. Nedlac will be releasing an update on the implementation of the Jobs Summit agreements on Tuesday.
