NEDLAC's PLANNING FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS

Nedlac's Management Committee, which met today in Johannesburg, decided that a special Executive Council session will be held in June in order to develop the vision and strategy for Nedlac in the next five years. The date for the workshop has been provisionally agreed for 24 and 25 June. This will allow for the appointees to the new Cabinet to be present at the workshop. The Ministers of Finance, Trade and Industry, Labour and Public Works sit on Nedlac's Executive Council.

The post-election Nedlac Executive Council is likely to see some changes, with Labour delegates Mbhazima Shilowa, Connie September, John Gomomo leaving the labour movement for political positions. Meanwhile, Business South Africa has indicated that Raymond Parsons, overall Business Convenor at Nedlac, will continue in this role after his retirement from SACOB in June.

Sixth International Meeting of Economic and Social Councils and similar institutions.

Nedlac's overall convenors and acting executive director will represent Nedlac at this meeting, which is to be held in Mauritius from 1 to 2 July. The last meeting, in Venezuela in March 1997, was attended by a similar delegation. The meetings are co-ordinated by the French Economic and Social Council, which has been in existence since 1947. Nedlac hopes to forge closer relations with its Southern African counterparts at this meeting.

Public Finance and Monetary Policy Chamber

Labour has appointed a new delegation to this Chamber, headed by Neil Coleman of Cosatu. A Chamber workshop was held on 29 April to discuss openly the problems this chamber has experienced in the past six months, and to find ways to overcome them. Government, labour and business committed themselves to ensuring that senior delegates attend.

Demarcation applications

The Management Committee supported recommendations on demarcation applications with respect to:

  • the Hairdressing and Cosmetology Services Bargaining Council;
  • the Bargaining Council for the Jewellery and Precious Metal Industry (Cape)

Nedlac's premises

The Management Committee has recommended that Nedlac begin looking to buy its own building, saying that, as a statutory body, it should have permanent accommodation. In the meantime, Nedlac will extend its current lease for a further three years.

The next Management Committee meeting will be on 21 May 1999.
