Nedlac's Executive Council
ratifies amendments to the Compensation for Occupational Injuries
and Diseases Act

A report on amendments to the
Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act(Coida) was
ratified by the Nedlac Executive Council today.
The proposal makes provision for replacing or amending certain
obsolete expressions and provisions in the Act to:
- Effect certain textual corrections and express certain
provisions more clearly.
- Provide for the payment of compensation to the dependants of an
assessor.
- Appoint alternate members of the board.
- Provide for the payment of interest on overdue assessments and
for the position where the presiding officer or an assessor dies
during a hearing or becomes unable to act.
- Remove the duty of employers to provide first aid.
- Provide for the Minister of Labour to consult the Compensation
Board.
- Provide for the accountability of the fund to be transferred to
the director-general of the Department of Labour.
