NEDLAC CORRECTS REPORT ON THE PROPOSED TRAINING
LEVY
8 July 1996
In a report titled, "Payroll levy plan to pay for training"
published in Business Day on Friday, July 5, 1996, Nedlac Executive
Director Jayendra Naidoo was quoted as saying Nedlac's Executive
Council "had moved from investigations mode to negotiations mode.
We set up a negotiating committee to hammer out an agreement on the
levy."
Naidoo said he was incorrectly quoted in the report as saying
the negotiating committee was to hammer out an "agreement on the
levy".
"The report gives the impression that the levy option was the
only one sanctioned by Nedlac's Executive Council," he said.
"In fact, the Executive Council of Nedlac has agreed to enter
into a negotiation mode, not on a training levy per se as reported,
but more broadly on the subject of funding of training."
"A training levy is in fact one of four options which the
parties will have to consider. A final report with recommendations
on the preferred option is exected to be tabled at Nedlac within
the next six weeks," he said.
