NEDLAC TO HOLD CRUCIAL SUMMIT ON 1 JUNE
24 May 1996
The Nedlac annual Summit takes place on Saturday, 1 June, where
a resolution on its future focus will be taken.
Nedlac Executive Director Jayendra Naidoo will table a
comprehensive review of Nedlac's activities and achievements during
the first year of its existence. In his address to the summit, Mr
Naidoo will also identify issues which will be dealt with during
1996.
Mr Naidoo says the Summit is crucial for defining Nedlac's
future focus. "The Summit will give the membership of the Nedlac
constituencies an opportunity to review Nedlac's activities and
progress during its first year, and, most importantly, will address
the challenges facing Nedlac and its constituencies in the year
ahead. After one year of activity and in the light of recent
tensions between the constituencies, it will be significant if the
constituencies were able to reinforce their commitment to the
negotiating process in Nedlac, and to building social partnership
on critical economic, labour and social issues. It is hoped that
the Summit will help lay the basis for making the coming year a
period of successful agreement-making and implementation of those
agreements."
Deputy President Thabo Mbeki will preside at the Summit, which
will be attended by 300 key figures drawn from the memberships of
Nedlac's four constituencies-government, labour business and
community-as well as Parliament, foreign legations, the media and
public. The Summit will include a plenary session for discussion,
questions and comments from the Nedlac constituencies' members. The
convenors of the four Nedlac chambers will also report on the work
of the chambers.
The Summit will be held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand from
09h00 until 13h30 on Saturday, 1 June. Deputy President Mbeki will
deliver the keynote address.
Other speakers will include the leaders of the Nedlac
constituencies, namely, Business South Africa president Leslie Boyd
(for the business constituency), National Women's Coalition
convenor Thandi Sigodi (for the community constituency), Cosatu
secretary-general Sam Shilowa (for labour), and Minister of Labour
Tito Mboweni (for government).
