MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION -
SASOL SYNFUEL PROTECTION STUDY
6 June 1995
In March 1995 Nedlac's Liquid Fuels Industry Task Force (LFITF)
commissioned consultants Arthur Andersen to conduct an independent
study into protection afforded to Sasol's synthetic fuel
operations. An LFITF project committee was established to oversee
and monitor the investigation. The consultants presented the
project committee with a preliminary report on 26 May 1995. Their
final report was completed on 2 June 1995 and was due for
presentation to the full LFITF today.
Following complaints from the oil industry that there were
discrepancies between the preliminary and final reports, it was
decided to postpone the LFITF meeting to first provide the project
committee with an opportunity to consider the final report and the
oil industry's complaints with respect to the report.
The project committee received a presentation from the oil
industry on the areas that it had identified as differing between
the two reports, and heard explanations from the consultants with
respect to these areas. Following these discussions, the project
committee concluded that it was satisfied that consultants Arthur
Andersen had met their brief and discharged of their duties. On
that basis the committee agreed to submit the report and its
contents to the LFITF for formal consideration. The oil industry
registered that it was not in a position to accept the report,
arguing that because the differences between the preliminary and
final reports were material, the process should allow for further
comment to be received.
The project committee furthermore agreed that a full meeting of
the LFITF should be convened to receive a presentation on the
report, whereafter it will be publicly released and a process
identified for constituencies to consider the report's
findings.
The media will be kept informed of developments.
