MAURITIUS SEEKS INFO ON NEDLAC
A high level delegation led by the Mauritian Minister of
Economic Development, Financial Services and Corporate Affairs, Mr
Sushil Kushiram, together with senior labour and business
representatives, visited Nedlac recently.
Mauritius has a socio-economic council, and legislation to
formalise the operations of the council was prepared under the
previous government. However, with the coming to power of the new
coalition government in September last year, it was felt that this
legislation should be reviewed.
The delegation, which incd the Director-Generals of Finance and
Economic Development, quizzed the Nedlac constituency
representatives on a number of issues, including how Nedlac
meetings are chaired, the level of government participation, and
the issue of negotiations vs consultations. The delegation was also
very interested to hear how Nedlac's community constituency
functions.
It was agreed that relations between the two councils should be
strengthened, particularly in the light of both countries'
membership of the International Association of Socio-Economic
Councils and similar institutions.
