NEDLAC IN 20001 - MESSAGE FROM PHILLIP DEXTER
The year 2001 is a year of important challenges for the NEDLAC constituencies. Having adopted a far-reaching declaration at the Annual Summit of NEDLAC in 2000, the constituencies now need to put flesh to these broad agreements. Essentially this means turning a stated commitment towards addressing the identified national priorities into a practical set of agreements.

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN
After extensive planning, consultation and research, the Nedlac parties have agreed on a "Proudly South African" campaign to stimulate economic growth and job creation through increased demand for South African goods and services. Implementation of the campaign is due to begin in April. The campaign stems from the commitment by Nedlac constituencies in the Presidential Jobs Summit to a campaign of this nature.

THE PLASTIC BAG DILEMMA
As South Africans, we are all too familiar with the sight of plastic bags flapping along the fences lining our national roads, littering school yards, polluting rivers. The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Valli Moosa, has called them, ironically, South Africa's national flower.

CHAMBER BRIEFS
Government has tabled the Pension Funds Second Amendment Bill, 2000, which deals with the surplus on pension funds issue. The Chamber will be resuming negotiations on this issue in February.

MAURITIUS SEEKS INFO ON NEDLAC
A high level delegation led by the Mauritian Minister of Economic Development, Financial Services and Corporate Affairs, Mr Sushil Kushiram, together with senior labour and business representatives, visited Nedlac recently.

NOTICES OF INTENDED SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROTEST ACTION

Nedlac has a statutory obligation, placed on it by Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act, to consider notices of intended socio-economic protest action, tabled by registered trade unions or federations of trade unions.

TRADE AND INDUSTRY PRIORITIES IN 2001
A high-level policy session was held with the Minister, Deputy Minister and several senior Departmental officials of Trade and Industry on 18 January. The Minister briefed the Nedlac constituencies on the reorganisation of the Department, as well as its priorities for 2001. Discussions were then held in order for constituencies to outline their own priorities, and to seek agreement on a work programme for the chamber for this year.
This is the first edition of the new-look "Dialogue", an expanded publication which will incorporate the four page "Nedlac News Update" and the tabloid "Dialogue" previously published. It will come out every two months and cover issues on Nedlac's agenda, activities at Nedlac and other information of use and interest to Nedlac's constituencies.
