GLOBALISATION, CORPORATISM AND WORKPLACE CHANGE
In June, Nedlac was fortunate to be able to host internationally renowned speaker on globalisation, Manuel Castells, Professor of Sociology and Planning at the University of California, Berkley. He was joined by Martin Carnoy, Professor of Education and Economics at Stanford University.

HIGH LEVEL DISCUSSION ON JOB LOSSES
In July 1999 Cosatu tabled seven reasons for intended protest action relating to increasing job losses taking place. During the discussions that followed the tabling of the Section 77 notice between August 1999 and February 2000, it was agreed that there had been sufficient progress on three of these issues, namely the reduction of interest rates, the implementation of jobs summit resolutions and the implementation of customs and excise regulations. Four issues remained outstanding, and, on the basis of these, Cosatu proceeded with the intended protest action, culminating in a national stayaway on May 10.

EXPANDING DIALOGUE
On 5 April 2000, Nedlac launched its 'Expanding Dialogue' series. This series aims to provide constituency representatives the opportunity to engage in informal discussion amongst themselves and with specialists, who do not ordinarily attend Nedlac meetings, on topics that are of relevance to the pursuit of economic growth and social equity. The seminars will further serve to strengthen relationships between the representatives of various organisations in South Africa who may otherwise not be able to meet to discuss issues of common relevance. Since the inception of the series, approximately 150 people have participated in this programme of expanding dialogue. Full reports on the seminars can be obtained from "Seminars".
