LOCAL ACTION AND IMPLEMENTATION
Government has completed a framework that will strengthen
the participation of constituencies and broaden ownership by
communities in the Integrated Development Planning (IDP). Business
has said that it will mobilise local business to participate in the
IDP processes on an organised basis once this framework is in
place. Business will also explore the potential for synergies
between corporate social investment and government priorities in
IDP.
Local economic development
In order to promote local economic development, Government
committed to extending the number of Multi-Purpose Community
Centres (MPCCs)
The number of operational MPCCs has risen from 37 at the time of
GDS to 43, following the operationalization of MPCCs at OR Tambo,
Cacadu and Amatole (Eastern Cape);Waterberg (Limpopo); Bophirima
(North West) and Nkangala (Mpumalanga).
Through the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), two
Integrated Energy Centres have been established. The Clean Energy
programme has been demonstrated to 16 000 houses.
The South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors
(SAFCEC) is implementing a mentor program in collaboration with the
Consolidated Municipal Infrastructure Program (CMIP) and the
Construction Education and Training Authority to enhance the
capacity of emerging contractors.
