INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION SECTOR SUMMIT
A highly successful Sector Summit was held on 3-4 June in Midrand.
The summit, which was chaired by Nedlac Executive Director, Phillip
Dexter, brought together over 600 key stakeholders in information
and communications to find ways to ensure that the sector
contributes to economic and social development in South
Africa.
SAMWU TAKES
STEPS AGAINST MICRO LENDERS
Part of the Financial Transformation Sector Summit
process, which is currently on the agenda of the Public Finance and
Monetary Policy Chamber at Nedlac, involves discussion of the
practices of micro lenders. This article was contributed to the
Dialogue by the South African Labour Bulletin, and can be read in
full in the June edition (Vol 26 No 3)
CHAMBER
BRIEFS: LABOUR MARKET CHAMBER
Immigration Policy: Nedlac has attempted to
add value to the Immigration Bill discussion, although this has not
been an easy process. A report was presented to the Portfolio
Committee on Home Affairs during its deliberation on the Bill
indicating that the Nedlac parties were not satisfied with the
process that had taken place.
FRIDGE
RESEARCH
Support for the South African jewellery industry: The Nedlac
constituencies, through the Fridge mechanism, have been involved in
various initiatives to grow South Africa's jewellery industry. The
project has involved working closely with the Jewellery Council.
Workshops have been held with emerging export marketing groups in
Johannesburg and Cape Town.

SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN UPDATE: ENSURING EDUCATION SPENDING SUPPORTS
JOB CREATION
The Department of Education has become the first
government department to commit itself to giving preference to
Proudly South African members in awarding tenders. This move
strengthens a growing trend towards ensuring that procurement
decisions are linked to job creation and the Proudly South African
campaign.
